In honor of the contest we're currently running to design a fabric for the CH468 Oculus chair, our blog this month focuses on our partnership with noted Danish furniture company Carl Hansen & Son. This post by Tim Elms, Coalesse Director of Product Marketing, shares his experience of the grand opening of the Carl Hansen & Son showroom in California. If you’re a fan of Danish design, learn more about Coalesse’s Carl Hansen & Son Blank Canvas Contest for a chance to visit Denmark.

The Carl Hansen & Son logo has long been a symbol of Danish design, amazing heritage, and globally recognized products. Coalesse is proud to partner with them to provide our customers more choices to create inspiring spaces that inspire great work.

Carl Hansen & Son is distinguished by their emphasis on handcraftsmanship. Below you see Benny, a talented maker of CH24 Wishbone Chair paper cord seats, demonstrating his work. He lives in Denmark and is a long-standing member of the Carl Hansen & Son operations team, traveling around the world to demonstrate his paper cord craft.

There is always time for fun when celebrating design. When Benny was on break, I attempted to take over the paper cord duties. However, I quickly learned this is not something just anyone can do. I rapidly retreated, and Benny resumed demonstrating his craft.

Benny is so committed to his work, he has a tattoo of the CH24 Wishbone Chair on his forearm. He has worked on thousands. The wishbone chair is an iconic example of the work of Hans Wegner. His work demands craft and beautiful form but never compromises on comfort. Hans is often quoted as saying no chair is complete until someone sits in it. He always had the person in mind as he designed.
